She spent many years studying with numerous impressionist artists.

She is a featured artist in Art of the West, a guide book of western artists. She is a member of Plein Aire Painters of Oklahoma, Oil Painters of America, Oklahoma Art Guild, Midwest Alla Prima Painters, Bartlesville Art Association, and American Women Artist.

Joan found her place in the field of fine art as a plein aire impressionist painter. Her media preference is oil on canvas with a focus on landscape and still life paintings. She strives to finish her work in a single "sitting" to capture the full effect of form and natural light in a sustained creative flow.

Her work has been shown at the Philbrook and Gilcrease museums in Tulsa, Talisman Gallery in Bartlesville, OK, and the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City. Her work is also in the permanent collection at the Albright Institute in New York. She has been published in Southwest Art and Art of the West magazines.

She is currently represented by Ziegler Gallery in Tulsa, Two Rivers Gallery in Steamboat Springs, CO.; Elkhorn Gallery in Winter Park, CO., and Shadid Gallery in Edmond, OK.
